In 2009, the Cameron Park Community Service District built a new Community Center with a basketball gymnasium and outdoor swimming pool. The Service District wanted to lower its energy costs by including solar heating panels on the gymnasium roof to heat the pool water.
Meline Engineering worked with Bergquam Energy Systems to develop a cost-effective design and installation. The original solar-thermal system design in the construction documents called for expensive evacuated tube solar collectors. Meline Engineering and Bergquam Energy designed a more efficient, less expensive system using 30 Heliodyne Flat Plate collectors. Piping was routed from the mechanical room through the gymnasium and to the solar panels mounted on the gymnasium roof. The design and installation included pumps and heat exchangers, allowing the solar heating system to be integrated with the back-up gas-fired heating system.
